It was a great day yesterday for Cyprus at Web Summit 2016. The disruptive cleantech Cypriot start-up SoilTron managed to be among the 3 top start-ups presenting today (14.30 CY time) for the Web Summit Pitch Battle Final.
The founder Wael Al Masri, a 19 years old engineering student, powered by Gravity Ventures had two awesome pitches and convinced the judges of his dream of unlimited sustainable energy from soil.
On Day 1 SoilTron announce its participation in Web Summit 2016 and exhibited in the Hardware & IoT exhibition area. It was the first time that SoilTron prototype unveiled and shared with the 50,000 entrepreneurs and investors attending the Web Summit in Lisbon.
SoilTron was founded by Wael Al Masri and Panayiotis Philimis. Wael started experimenting on soil energy from the age of 16 with the ambition to power the cities of the world. At the age of 18 he met Panayiotis a passionate inventor and entrepreneur who builds disruptive ventures. Panayiotis has a PhD in mechanical engineering with expertise in manufacturing and AI systems with 20 years’ experience in design and development of novel products and managed more than 40 disruptive research and development projects of budgets exceeding 60 million Euro.
“Attending Web Summit is an exciting opportunity for SoilTron to demonstrate our unique proposition to produce unlimited energy from soil powering the cities of tomorrow. We are ready to grasp the momentum of this event, to share our first prototypes by disseminating our beliefs regarding our products. We work hard the last 2 years doing tests and experiments. We are thrilled that we are in the Web Summit Pitch Battle final. Seeing our work appreciated in the biggest global tech startup conference it's totally amazing. Our goal is to win this. ” says Wael Al Masri, CEO and Founder of SoilTron.
Dr Panayiotis Philimis, co-founder of Soiltron and CEO at Gravity Ventures, mentioned to DisruptCyprus.com that “Each year, consumers spend over US$100 billion on purchasing lighting products. Lighting accounts for 19% of all electricity used globally and worth more than 6 trillion euros. Soiltron produces continuous ‘green’ electricity under any weather conditions with estimated lifespan. We love working with aspiring entrepreneurs and start-ups, build new ventures and help them grow and blossom. Gravity ventures is a next generation venture building incubator that fosters and propels innovation through constant interaction, empowering founders to make real impact and create the world of tomorrow. We want to showcase to the global start-up community that Cyprus is a great place to build start-ups with a disruptive mindset. We are glad that Soiltron is in the final of this prestigious competition.”
